Royce Keys Off WWE TV Indefinitely After Jacob Fatu Attack

Royce Keys has been pulled from WWE programming indefinitely following the post-match beatdown he suffered at the hands of Jacob Fatu on the August 3 episode of RAW.

Michael Cole delivered the update during the August 10 broadcast, telling viewers that Keys is dealing with a bruised larynx and a cervical strain stemming from his Street Fight with Fatu and the vicious assault that followed. WWE has not given any timetable for when Keys might return, leaving him officially sidelined for the foreseeable future as the feud between the two men continues to build.

The injuries stem directly from the August 3 Street Fight, which Fatu won by forcing Keys to submit with the Tongan Death Grip. That wasn’t the end of it, though. After the bell, Fatu wedged a steel chair around Keys’ neck and drove him into the corner with a hip attack, an assault brutal enough that WWE followed it up with a digital exclusive showing a bloodied Keys being treated by medical staff before being stretchered out of the arena.

Despite the dramatic presentation, there’s no indication Keys is actually hurt. Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the angle was strictly storyline-driven, not a cover for a legitimate injury.

Still, the angle effectively puts a pause on what had been a fast-rising run for Keys since he signed with WWE in January. He debuted in the Royal Rumble, later showed up on SmackDown, and steadily worked his way into prominent storylines — most notably aligning with LA Knight and Solo Sikoa to beat Fatu and The Usos at SummerSlam just two days before the Street Fight that flipped the rivalry on its head.

From a storytelling standpoint, this is a smart way to escalate the Fatu-Keys program without burning through the rivalry in one match. Fatu, already established as one of WWE’s most dominant heels, gets to look even more monstrous by not just beating Keys but nearly incapacitating him afterward — the kind of statement victory that raises the stakes for whatever comes when Keys resurfaces looking for payback. It also gives WWE a built-in excuse to shelve Keys creatively for a bit while positioning his eventual return as a moment worth investing in.

For now, Fatu has the last laugh, and Keys’ next move remains unknown. Whether he comes back seeking retribution on his own or with backup from Knight and Sikoa, the door is wide open for WWE to pick this rivalry back up whenever the story calls for it.
