Roman Reigns Signals Retirement Is Coming, But Not Yet

Roman Reigns has reignited retirement speculation after telling Complex that he still sees “a couple to a few years” left in his in-ring career, along with some “loose ends” and “logic gaps” he wants to address before walking away for good.

The comments mark an update from what Reigns said back in April 2025, when he suggested he only had “another year or two max” left following WrestleMania 42. With that window now closing and the World Heavyweight Champion still very much active atop WWE’s roster, his latest remarks suggest the runway may be a bit longer than fans initially assumed — but the finish line is clearly on his mind.

That framing matters because it changes how fans should watch every Reigns match and storyline going forward. If the OTC is genuinely thinking in terms of unfinished business, then his remaining programs are likely to be chosen with intention rather than as one-off title defenses.

One obvious thread still hanging is his relationship with Seth Rollins. Their rivalry, rooted in Rollins’ betrayal of The Shield back in 2014, appeared to reach a resolution at SummerSlam when Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship over his former brother-in-arms. Reigns notably declined to hit Rollins with a chair and offered a fist bump after the bell, signaling he’d let go of over a decade of resentment. With that chapter closed as adversaries, there’s a sentimental case for one final on-screen reunion — perhaps a Shield-style entrance, complete with the old theme music, as a team rather than as enemies.

Reigns also used the Complex interview to note that Cody Rhodes is the only other star he considers capable of carrying WWE’s banner at a top level. That’s not a throwaway comment — it reads as a signal that Reigns may be looking to help build up a new face of the company before he steps back. Oba Femi stands out as the most logical candidate, having already teased a program with Reigns as far back as April. With a Reigns–Femi WrestleMania 43 main event reportedly floated as a direction WWE is considering, there’s a real opportunity for the promotion to use the Grandest Stage of Them All to formally elevate Femi into the main-event conversation.

The final loose end centers on the Bloodline itself. Reigns has been the Tribal Chief since Afa and Sika presented him with the Ula Fala following his Hell in a Cell victory over Jey Uso back in 2020, and he’s defended that position multiple times since — against Jey Uso at SummerSlam 2023, Solo Sikoa in January 2025, and Jacob Fatu at Clash in Italy this past May. If Reigns is truly preparing to exit, it would make narrative sense for him to anoint the next Anoa’i or Fatu family member to carry the torch as the family’s next leader.

None of this means Reigns is walking out the door immediately — by his own account, there’s still real time left. But with the champion himself openly discussing an endgame, WWE now has a roadmap of major storylines it can lean on to send him off in a way that ties together the Shield legacy, the next generation of stars, and the Bloodline saga that has defined this era of the company.
