Road Dogg Brian James Expected To Attend TNA Slammiversary, Could Join Creative Team

Brian James — better known to wrestling fans as Road Dogg — is expected to be in Boston this Sunday for TNA Wrestling’s Slammiversary pay-per-view, and there’s growing belief behind the scenes that he could end up playing a role in the company’s creative direction.

James departed WWE in March after serving as co-head writer of SmackDown since February 2025. His exit followed an annual review, and reports indicated he was unhappy with how that review went. Since then, his next move has been a subject of speculation — and it now appears TNA Wrestling may be the answer.

While James was initially discussed as a potential producer for the company, the situation has evolved. With Tommy Dreamer no longer part of TNA’s creative setup, some within the organization believe James could slot into a creative role alongside head writer Hunter Johnston and VP of TV Production Eric Tompkins. TNA had reportedly tried to keep his expected attendance quiet.

Adding an interesting wrinkle to the story is James’s reported close relationship with Johnny Russo, head writer of WWE NXT. Given the existing working partnership between TNA and WWE NXT, that connection could prove valuable for both sides as they continue to develop their collaborative relationship.

James is a WWE Hall of Famer — both as a solo act and as a member of D-Generation X — and brings significant experience on both sides of the curtain, having spent years as both an in-ring performer and a backstage executive. His fellow DX alumni Triple H now serves as WWE’s Chief Content Officer, while Shawn Michaels leads NXT talent development and creative.

Slammiversary takes place Sunday, June 28, in Boston. Whether James’s presence there marks the beginning of a more formal role with TNA remains to be seen, but the groundwork appears to be in place.
