Remembering Neville’s Foundational Role in NXT’s Black & Gold Era

The wrestling world is still processing the news that PAC, best known during his AEW run but first introduced to global audiences as Adrian Neville and later simply Neville, passed away at age 40. Before he became a mainstay of AEW’s roster, the man born Benjamin Setterley helped lay the groundwork for one of the most influential eras in modern WWE developmental history — NXT’s so‑called Black & Gold era.

Neville’s importance to that chapter can be traced directly to February 2014, when WWE launched the WWE Network and chose NXT Arrival as its debut live special. The main event pitted Neville against Bo Dallas in a Ladder match for the NXT Championship, and Neville’s win made him, in many respects, the first true NXT Champion of that new creative direction. It was a showcase moment — the company’s first Network offering needed to hook subscribers, and Neville’s high-flying performance did exactly that.

WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H, who oversaw NXT during that period, spoke to the significance of that night following news of Neville’s death, calling the Arrival main event the beginning of a new era for the brand and crediting Neville — Ben, as he referred to him — as a major force behind it.

That win helped set the stage for what came next. Later in 2014, WWE brought in a wave of independent and international stars — Kevin Steen, Fergal Devitt and KENTA, who would become Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and Hideo Itami, respectively — joining Neville and Sami Zayn atop the NXT roster. Together, the five were often discussed as a unit in the way fans would later talk about the Four Horsewomen on the women’s side — a nucleus whose diverse styles and independent-scene pedigree came to define what Black & Gold NXT meant stylistically and aesthetically. Three of that group remain fixtures in the WWE Championship picture on SmackDown today, a testament to how durable that class turned out to be.

Neville himself would go on to memorable runs as NXT Champion, and later as the self-proclaimed King of the Cruiserweights on 205 Live, before his 2017 departure from WWE and eventual re-emergence in AEW as PAC. But his NXT tenure remains a foundational piece of the brand’s identity — arguably the spark that let WWE pivot NXT from a straightforward developmental territory into a distinct, athletically driven product that stood apart from the main roster.

It’s worth remembering, especially now, how much of that pivot rested on a single Ladder match on a brand-new streaming platform, headlined by a performer whose combination of speed and aerial risk-taking was virtually unmatched in WWE at the time. Without that performance resonating the way it did, it’s fair to wonder whether the talent influx and creative freedom that defined Black & Gold NXT would have unfolded the same way.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the wrestling industry, Neville’s NXT run stands as one of the clearest examples of how a single night can alter the trajectory of an entire brand.
