Paul Heyman Reveals WWE Had Him Slated To Manage Chris Benoit Before Brock Lesnar Changed Everything

Before Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar became one of the most iconic pairings in WWE history, there was a very different plan in place — one that would have seen Heyman return to television alongside Chris Benoit.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Heyman detailed how his post-WrestleMania 18 comeback was originally built around Benoit, only for everything to shift the night before the event itself. According to Heyman, it was actually Taz — now with AEW — who set the wheels in motion by steering him toward a young Brock Lesnar, who was growing restless in the OVW developmental system.

“I was coming back on camera (after) WrestleMania 18 to manage — I hate that word — Chris Benoit,” Heyman said. “Brock was very impatient in OVW and moved back to Minneapolis and told WWE ‘Put me on the main roster or cut me loose.'” Heyman described Lesnar standing in the ring during dark match trybacks while veteran agents gave him generic feedback, and said Taz pulled him aside out of genuine concern. “Taz said: ‘Hey brother, they’re gonna screw this up, you gotta get involved in this over here,'” Heyman recalled, noting the parallel to how he and Taz had transformed him from The Tazmaniac into a credible MMA-style fighter during their ECW days.

From there, Heyman went to Vince McMahon and made his case. He was handed creative control of Lesnar’s matches and began developing the philosophy that would define the act — what he described as “simple, spotlighted, singular.” The chemistry between the two became impossible to ignore, and McMahon saw it firsthand. The night before WrestleMania 18, McMahon pulled Heyman aside and told him the Benoit pairing was off. Lesnar was his.

“I knew, this is a once ever opportunity and that’s a once ever athlete, and this will be a once ever act,” Heyman said.

Lesnar made his main roster debut on the March 18, 2002 episode of Raw with Heyman at his side, and the partnership that followed spanned decades, title reigns, and WrestleMania main events. That it nearly never happened — and that it took Taz recognizing what was being squandered — makes the origin story all the more compelling.
