Matt Hardy: WWE Wanted Me To Become Full-Time Producer Before 2020 Exit

Matt Hardy says his final WWE contract talks in 2020 came down to a simple disagreement: Vince McMahon wanted him off the road as a wrestler and into a full-time backstage role, while Hardy wasn’t ready to hang up his boots.

Speaking on his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy explained that WWE was willing to keep him around, but only if he agreed to become a producer, coach or agent rather than remain an active in-ring performer. He said he turned that offer down flatly, telling McMahon he still wanted to wrestle while his body allowed it.

Hardy tied the situation to a broader pattern he says exists within WWE’s management style, where talent can get boxed into a fixed role once the company forms an opinion of what they’re best suited for. He suggested he and longtime friend/rival Christian Cage both dealt with this over the years, believing McMahon saw bigger commercial upside in Edge and Jeff Hardy. Hardy was careful to note that didn’t mean McMahon undervalued him or Christian, just that once McMahon decided how he viewed a performer, that view tended to stick.

That dynamic, Hardy said, is exactly what shaped his exit calculus. He acknowledged WWE could have offered him something creatively interesting in the short term, floating the idea that he might have been worked into programming involving Windham Rotunda’s Fiend character opposite Jeff Hardy’s Willow persona. But he said he suspected that would have only been a temporary detour before he was steered back into the behind-the-scenes track WWE had already mapped out for him. As Hardy put it, Vince always got what he wanted eventually, so staying would have meant delaying the inevitable rather than avoiding it.

Rather than re-sign, Hardy let his deal lapse when it expired in March 2020 and turned up in AEW almost immediately, debuting during the promotion’s early pandemic-era shows and going on to compete at Double or Nothing that year. He remained a fixture in AEW through 2024 before making his way to TNA Wrestling, where he continues to wrestle while also working in a behind-the-scenes capacity.

The story is a useful reminder of how much control WWE’s old regime exercised over talent trajectories, and how those decisions could push established veterans elsewhere rather than adapt to what they wanted for their own careers. Hardy’s move to AEW in 2020 ended up being one of the more significant free-agent pickups of that pandemic period, giving the fledgling promotion an established name with decades of star power at a moment when it needed exactly that kind of credibility boost.

It’s also notable that Hardy has landed on a role in TNA that actually blends both paths WWE once presented him — staying an active competitor while also contributing creatively and behind the curtain. Six years after walking away from a producer-track ultimatum, Hardy appears to have found a version of that hybrid role on his own terms, just not with the company that first proposed it.
