ESPN’s Fortenbaugh: Reigns’ Limited Schedule Is a Strength

Roman Reigns’ increasingly limited WWE schedule isn’t a bug — it’s a feature, according to ESPN personality Joe Fortenbaugh, who says the Tribal Chief’s selective appearances have only heightened his star power.

Since his reinvention as the Tribal Chief during WWE’s pandemic era, Reigns has steadily drifted away from a traditional full-time wrestling schedule. WWE has largely reserved him for major storylines and premium live events rather than weekly television, a shift that has drawn mixed reactions from fans who’d like to see him more often.

Speaking with Denise Salcedo, Fortenbaugh was asked to compare Reigns to Bret Hart and ultimately sided with Hart, but not without heaping praise on Reigns’ business impact. “Roman needs to exist like Taker. He needs to exist as a heel,” Fortenbaugh said. “The fact that he has done what he has done financially for this company for so long — thoroughly impressive. I think there’s a lot that people like us who work on a camera can learn from him with how slow he takes everything.”

Fortenbaugh admitted his own on-camera instinct is often to rush, worrying about hitting commercial breaks, whereas Reigns does the opposite. “He does everything three steps slower than he needs to, and that dramatic effect really works well for him,” he said.

That unhurried pace — in entrances, promos, even simple reactions — has become one of Reigns’ signature traits, and Fortenbaugh believes it gives every moment more weight. Rather than packing segments with content, Reigns leans on atmosphere and crowd energy to do the heavy lifting.

Fortenbaugh extended that philosophy beyond the ring, pointing to Reigns’ near-total absence from interviews and media appearances. “Supply and demand,” he said. “You don’t see him doing interviews. He’s not everywhere this week. That is big. Not being able to access him only leads to more desire for seeing him and hearing him.”

The debate over Reigns’ reduced workload isn’t new — it followed him throughout his record-setting championship reign, when WWE would sometimes go weeks without featuring its top titleholder on television. Critics have long argued that approach shortchanges fans, but Fortenbaugh’s take flips that criticism into a virtue: scarcity as a storytelling tool rather than a liability.

It’s worth noting Reigns was considerably more present during the build to SummerSlam, which culminated in his win over longtime rival Seth Rollins — proof that WWE still knows when to dial his exposure back up for a major program. The pattern suggests a deliberate strategy: keep him mostly off television, then flood the zone when the story demands it.

Whether that model continues to pay off as Reigns ages further into a legacy role remains to be seen, but Fortenbaugh’s comments reinforce a broader truth about WWE’s modern main event scene — sometimes less really is more.
