AEW and NJPW’s Forbidden Door Returns in 2026, Carrying the Weight of Its Own Legacy

Forbidden Door is coming back. AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling are set to stage another edition of their joint supershow in 2026, continuing a partnership that fundamentally reshaped how fans think about cross-promotional wrestling in the modern era.

When the first Forbidden Door took place in 2022, it felt genuinely unprecedented — two major promotions pooling their rosters in a way that hadn’t been attempted at that scale in years, producing a card where the sheer novelty was half the attraction. The idea that wrestlers from NJPW and AEW could share a ring on a major pay-per-view event felt like a door being kicked open, and the wrestling world took notice.

Now, heading into 2026, the event carries a different kind of pressure. The novelty has worn off in the way novelty always does, and the question is whether the show can deliver on the strength of its matches and storytelling rather than the electricity of its concept alone. That’s a harder thing to sustain — and a more interesting creative challenge.

Both AEW and NJPW have seen significant roster and creative shifts since that first collaboration, meaning the 2026 installment will almost certainly look quite different from its predecessors in terms of who’s involved and what stories are being told across the two promotions.

Forbidden Door has become one of the more distinctive events on the annual calendar — a rare live example of two major wrestling companies genuinely working together rather than competing in isolation. Whether the 2026 edition can recapture the magic or forge a new identity of its own remains to be seen, but the stage is being set.
