Matt Mathews Set To Appear On WWE Raw In September

WWE is bringing comedian and social media star Matt Mathews back into the fold, this time booking him for the flagship Monday Night Raw brand. The company announced that Mathews will appear on the September 7, 2026 edition of Raw, which is scheduled to emanate from Birmingham, Alabama.

This won’t be Mathews’ first taste of WWE programming. He popped up on the June 23 episode of NXT, inserting himself at ringside during a match pitting Hank and Tank against Birthright’s Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo and Uriah Connors. His interference proved decisive, helping Hank and Tank pick up the win.

Mathews has built a massive following online with his unfiltered Southern humor and viral farm videos, later parlaying that popularity into sold-out comedy tours. WWE hasn’t detailed exactly what role he’ll play on Raw, but his name now joins a lineup already advertising Oba Femi, Liv Morgan, Dominik Mysterio, Penta, Sol Ruca and Seth Rollins for that show.

The move continues WWE’s ongoing strategy of mixing crossover stars and internet personalities into its weekly programming to draw in audiences outside the traditional wrestling fanbase. It’s a formula the company has leaned on repeatedly in recent years, with mixed results depending on how well the guest star is integrated into the storytelling.

That balancing act was on full display just weeks earlier. WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia appeared on the July 27 Raw ahead of his fight against Conor Benn, taking part in a segment with Dominik Mysterio, Danhausen and Joe Hendry that ended with Garcia smashing a guitar over Hendry’s back. The segment drew backlash from fans, some of it tied to past controversies involving Garcia, including previous racially charged comments.

Garcia later addressed the reaction in an interview with ESNews, expressing disappointment with how his cameo was constructed. He pointed to Floyd Mayweather’s celebrated 2008 program with Big Show as the kind of high-profile, well-built storyline he had hoped for. “That’s what I wanted. See, I wish they would’ve given me a better segment, because then I wouldn’t have gotten as much hate,” Garcia said.

That comparison is a useful lens for viewing Mathews’ upcoming appearance. Unlike Garcia, Mathews already has a built-in comedic niche that lines up naturally with WWE’s style of segment, and his NXT cameo suggests the company sees him as more than a one-off novelty. Whether Raw uses him for another feel-good angle or ties him into an actual storyline remains to be seen, but the early signs point to WWE wanting to make his return feel more substantial than a quick backstage wave to the camera.

With Raw continuing to lean on star power beyond the roster to build buzz, Mathews’ Birmingham appearance will be worth watching, both for what it means for him and for what it signals about how WWE plans to keep blending mainstream entertainment with its weekly shows.
