Chelsea Green Confirms Broken Orbital Bone After SmackDown Injury

Chelsea Green revealed she suffered a broken orbital bone during WWE SmackDown on Friday, August 7, just six days after winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship. The injury sent her to the emergency room following the show, and she addressed her condition directly in a video posted on Saturday, August 8, after initially hoping to keep it private.

“I did get injured last night. Stuff happens. It’s live television. It’s wrestling. It’s an occupational hazard,” Green said. “I ended up in the emergency room and I have a broken orbital bone. It looks amazing, all things considered. It feels awful, but looks pretty amazing. I have no idea what that means for me.”

Green, who has often leaned into past injuries as part of her chaotic on-screen persona, admitted this one hit differently. “Usually, you guys have seen me play into every single injury. But this feels different, obviously. It feels frustrating. I’m upset. I feel like if I didn’t have bad luck I’d have no luck at all. So I just need to take a little bit more time to process and to heal from the head trauma that is going on right now. Then, we’ll see what happens,” she said, adding that she’s taking things “day by day.”

There’s no timetable for her return, and WWE has not publicly commented on her status.

The injury happened during a Women’s Tag Team Championship match where Green and Tiffany Stratton challenged Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. Jacy Jayne interfered in the finish, allowing Henley to pin Green — a result that earned Jayne a future shot at Stratton’s Women’s United States Championship. The chaos didn’t stop there, as Nia Jax and Lash Legend jumped Green and Stratton afterward, with Jax ultimately posing with the Women’s Championship held high. It capped a hectic night for Green, whose title celebration for the interim championship had already been crashed by Fatal Influence earlier in the show. She’d also worked a live event in Fairfax, Virginia, two nights earlier alongside Charlotte Flair and Stratton.

Green’s confirmation followed earlier reporting that pointed to an orbital injury before she went public herself.

The timing couldn’t be much worse for WWE’s women’s title picture. Rhea Ripley, the reigning champion, revealed on August 6 that she’d undergone knee surgery after being out since June with a torn meniscus — the absence that led to the interim title being created in the first place. Green won that vacant strap in a five-way ladder match at SummerSlam on August 2, beating Flair, Jade Cargill, Stratton and Legend. Adam Pearce has said the plan was always for the interim champion to eventually face Ripley to unify the title.

Now both ends of that program are shelved with no return dates attached, leaving WWE needing to improvise around its top women’s storyline. Green’s momentum as a surprise breakout babyface-turned-champion made her one of the more compelling threads on SmackDown, and this injury threatens to stall that just as it was gaining steam. Expect WWE to lean on the Fatal Influence and Jax feuds to fill the void while everyone waits on updates for both Green and Ripley.
