Original Tiger Mask Sayama Speaks On Health, Retirement Ceremony Appearance

Satoru Sayama, the man who originated the Tiger Mask character decades ago, has given fans an update on his health following his appearance at Tiger Mask IV’s retirement ceremony.

Tiger Mask IV wrestled his final matches on July 7 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, with New Japan Pro-Wrestling hosting the send-off. Once the matches wrapped, the promotion held a post-match ceremony to celebrate the masked veteran’s career, and Sayama was among those who showed up to take part in the festivities.

Sayama, who wore the original Tiger Mask gimmick in the early 1980s and helped establish the character as one of the most influential in Japanese wrestling history, has since commented on his own condition and on performing the so-called ‘Tiger Step’ during the ceremony. The Tiger Step is closely associated with the Tiger Mask persona, and Sayama’s willingness to do it at Korakuen Hall added a personal touch to a night built around honoring the lineage he started.

The appearance served as a full-circle moment for New Japan and for fans of the Tiger Mask legacy, connecting Sayama’s original run to Tiger Mask IV’s two-decade-plus career as the character’s standard-bearer inside the ring. Tiger Mask IV had become one of the promotion’s most recognizable performers over the years, and having the character’s originator on hand for his farewell underscored just how much history was being closed out that night at Korakuen Hall.

No further details on Sayama’s health update were included beyond his own remarks tied to the ceremony, but his presence alone was a notable nod to a character that has spanned generations of Japanese wrestling. Tiger Mask IV’s in-ring career is now officially in the books, with New Japan closing that chapter in the building where so much of the character’s history was made.
