Paul Heyman Credits AEW With Raising Talent Pay, Sees ECW’s DNA Running Through Their Product

Paul Heyman has offered a candid assessment of what AEW’s rise has meant for professional wrestling, acknowledging that Tony Khan’s company has had a genuinely positive effect on talent compensation across the industry.

Appearing on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the WWE Hall of Famer didn’t mince words when asked whether wrestling is in a better place because of AEW’s existence. “I certainly hope so,” Heyman said. “It certainly changed the compensation for talent, and they’re on a viable network, they have a style that’s different than WWE’s. They present an alternative, if not a competitive brand.”

Heyman attributed the pay bump directly to the competitive pressure Khan’s financial resources created, noting that AEW arrived with “a billion dollar checkbook” at a time when talent was making significantly less than what the market could bear. The implication was clear: without a well-funded competitor willing to spend, WWE would have had less incentive to increase what it paid its performers.

Beyond the business angle, Heyman — who built ECW into one of the most influential promotions in wrestling history — said he recognizes his own fingerprints on AEW’s in-ring identity. He pointed specifically to Jon Moxley as carrying the torch of ECW legends like Sandman and New Jack, and drew a broader stylistic line between AEW’s overall presentation and the legendary series of matches between Rob Van Dam and Jerry Lynn in 1999.

“If you look at the AEW style, it’s Rob Van Dam versus Jerry Lynn from 1999,” Heyman said. “A lot of what AEW presents today is derived and is influenced by what RVD and Jerry Lynn were doing back then.”

It’s a striking acknowledgment from someone at the center of WWE’s creative world — that the promotion currently challenging his employer draws heavily from the very company he helped build decades ago. For Heyman, it seems less like a threat and more like a legacy playing out in real time.
