Paul Heyman Declares ‘ECW Is Dead’ Ahead of SummerSlam

Paul Heyman made it clear he’s not looking to relive the past. During an appearance tied to the build for WWE SummerSlam, the advocate for Brock Lesnar was met with a chorus of “ECW” chants from the crowd — a nod to his history as the promotion’s most famous mouthpiece. Heyman wasted no time shutting it down, telling the audience bluntly that ECW is dead, and that he wishes the same fate on Oba Femi.

The comment sets the tone for one of the most anticipated matches on the SummerSlam card, when Lesnar and Femi collide inside Hell in a Cell. SummerSlam is scheduled for August 1–2, and the pairing of a legacy attraction like Lesnar against the rising NXT standout Femi has been billed as a clash of eras — the Beast Incarnate against a new-generation powerhouse many see as the future of the industry.

Heyman’s line wasn’t just a throwaway shot at nostalgia. By invoking ECW’s demise in the same breath as Femi’s name, he leaned into his familiar heel-manager rhetoric, framing Lesnar’s opponent as something to be buried rather than built up. It’s the kind of promo Heyman has built a career on: dismissive, personal, and designed to get a rise out of whoever’s standing across the ring from his client.

Femi has steadily emerged as one of WWE’s most talked-about young stars, and a Hell in a Cell showdown with Lesnar represents a massive spotlight — win or lose. Heyman’s comments only raise the stakes further, positioning the match as a referendum on whether Femi can hang with a bona fide legend in one of WWE’s most brutal stipulations.

With SummerSlam just a couple of weeks away, expect Heyman to keep needling Femi in the lead-up, doing what he’s always done best: making the audience despise him right up until the bell rings.
