Trick Williams Reclaims WWE US Title, Speculation Turns to Future Challengers

Trick Williams is once again the WWE United States Champion after reclaiming the title at Sunday Night’s Main Event, marking his second reign with the belt. Williams first won the championship at WrestleMania 42 back in April, and after a stretch without the gold, he has returned to the top of the US Title picture heading into the fall.

With Williams back on top, attention is already shifting toward who might eventually dethrone him — and, more specifically, which stars around the roster have never held the US Championship at all. It’s a title with a long, storied lineage, and there’s no shortage of names circling the division looking to add their name to that list for the first time.

Cody Rhodes stands out as one of the most obvious candidates. The American Nightmare has already collected reigns with the Undisputed WWE Championship, the Raw and SmackDown tag titles, and the Intercontinental Championship, meaning a US Title run would complete a Grand Slam under WWE’s modern criteria. After coming up short against the WWE Championship at SummerSlam and dropping a match to Randy Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event, a pivot toward the US Title — and potentially a first singles collision with Williams — would make sense as part of Rhodes’ ongoing character evolution.

Je’Von Evans represents a different kind of story: one built around age and history rather than career completion. The 22-year-old has spoken about his ambitions to become the youngest world and Intercontinental Champion in company history, and a US Title win would put him in position to challenge Austin Theory’s mark as the youngest US Champion since the title’s return under the WWE banner. Evans would have until January 2029 to break that specific record.

Kit Wilson has also been positioning himself for a run at the gold. Back in March, he expressed a desire to challenge for the US Championship during WrestleMania 42 weekend, though that never materialized and he wound up in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal instead, which Royce Keys won. Wilson spent much of the summer teaming with The Miz before re-entering the US Title conversation on the house show circuit, including a challenge for the belt on August 22. A title win could set up an intriguing mentor-versus-mentee dynamic between Wilson and The Miz down the line.

Ricky Saints, who arrived on the main roster in May opposite then-champion Cody Rhodes, is still searching for his first title since making the jump. Despite an unsuccessful challenge for Williams’ US Title at Night of Champions and repeated house show attempts at the belt, Saints has yet to break through — something many expect to change eventually given how he was positioned upon his call-up.

Then there’s Drew McIntyre, who hasn’t been seen on WWE television since falling to Jacob Fatu at WrestleMania 42 while working on outside film projects. Like Rhodes, McIntyre needs only a US Title reign to complete his Grand Slam, and with report of him being back in the United States fueling return speculation, a run through the SmackDown midcard wouldn’t be out of the question whenever he resurfaces.

With Williams settling back into the champion’s seat, the US Title picture looks as crowded and compelling as it has in years — plenty of directions for WWE to take the belt, and plenty of stars with real motivation to finally get their hands on it.
