Tony Khan Welcomes Paul Heyman’s Comparison of AEW to the Spirit of ECW

Paul Heyman has drawn a line between his groundbreaking work with ECW and what Tony Khan has built with All Elite Wrestling — and Khan has embraced the comparison enthusiastically.

Heyman, the creative force behind Extreme Championship Wrestling before it folded in 2001, expressed the belief that AEW carries the same spirit that made ECW resonate so strongly with wrestling fans. For a promotion that has positioned itself as a genuine alternative to WWE since its launch in 2019, being favorably compared to ECW — the promotion that arguably defined what a scrappy, passionate alternative could look like — carries real weight.

Khan, for his part, was more than receptive to the sentiment. When AEW debuted in 2019, it became the first legitimate major wrestling company in the United States to challenge WWE’s dominance since WCW shuttered two decades earlier. The promotion has since carved out its own identity, attracting a devoted fanbase and a roster full of wrestlers who found a creative home outside of WWE’s umbrella.

Heyman, now a key figure in WWE’s creative structure as Special Counsel to Roman Reigns, is not someone who hands out praise lightly. His admiration for what ECW represented — passionate, unfiltered, fan-first wrestling — remains a touchstone for a large portion of the hardcore wrestling audience. Having that figure draw a parallel to AEW is the kind of outside validation that money genuinely cannot buy.

How much the comparison resonates beyond this moment remains to be seen, but for Khan and AEW, it’s a notable endorsement from one of the business’s most respected minds.
