Thunder Rosa Wins Mexican National Women’s Title in CMLL

Thunder Rosa added a new championship to her résumé on Friday, July 31, defeating India Sioux at CMLL Viernes Espectacular to become the new Mexican National Women’s Champion. Rosa put Sioux away with her signature Fire Thunder Driver, ending a title reign that had lasted 511 days and included two successful defenses.

Rosa’s path to the title shot ran through a crowded number-one contender’s match at CMLL’s July 19 show, where she outlasted a field that included Reyna Isis, Keyra, Garra Negra, Sanely, Skadi, Hera and Olympi to punch her ticket to Friday’s championship bout.

The win marks Rosa’s first title in CMLL since she began working under her dual agreement with the Mexican promotion and AEW. It’s a notable moment for a wrestler who has already built a substantial championship résumé, including a run as AEW Women’s Champion, and it underscores how seriously CMLL and AEW have leaned into their working relationship in recent years, with talent crossing over between the two promotions on a regular basis.

For Rosa specifically, capturing a championship in Mexico carries extra weight given her deep ties to lucha libre and her Mexican-American heritage, which she has long incorporated into her in-ring identity and presentation. Winning gold at CMLL, a promotion with nearly a century of history and one of the most storied women’s divisions in lucha libre, adds a layer of legitimacy and full-circle symbolism to her career that a title win elsewhere might not carry in quite the same way.

It also raises questions about how CMLL and AEW will book Rosa going forward. Talents working dual agreements between the two companies have periodically defended titles across shows and, in some cases, on each other’s major events, so it’s worth watching whether Rosa’s new title makes appearances outside of CMLL’s regular scheduling, or whether it factors into any future AEW programming given her past run as champion there.

As for India Sioux, dropping the title after a 511-day reign closes out a lengthy and successful run, but it likely won’t be the last time she’s in the title picture. CMLL’s women’s division has become a deep, competitive scene, and a rematch or a new challenger emerging from the contenders Rosa beat through in July wouldn’t be a surprise.

For now, the moment belongs to Thunder Rosa, who continues to add championship hardware in a career that already spans multiple promotions and countries.
