Sami Zayn’s Last-Minute Title Win at Night of Champions Reportedly Reshuffled WWE’s SummerSlam 2026 Plans

Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship victory at Night of Champions 2026 in Riyadh appears to have had ripple effects well beyond the moment itself — including a reported shake-up to WWE’s SummerSlam plans.

Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Zayn was not originally part of the creative vision for SummerSlam 2026. The company had reportedly been tracking toward a high-profile title match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes as the event’s marquee championship attraction. That matchup could still materialize later in the summer, but Zayn’s title win has clearly altered the roadmap.

Perhaps the most telling detail surrounding the title change is the story of the championship side plates. WWE’s production team is typically notified well in advance of any planned title change so that custom name plates bearing the new champion’s name can be fabricated before the event. In Zayn’s case, those responsible for producing the new plates reportedly weren’t given advance notice — a strong indication that the decision to put the belt on Zayn was finalized only shortly before Night of Champions took place.

Whether the call came weeks or just days before the premium live event, the result was undeniable: Zayn captured the title in front of an electric Saudi Arabian crowd that embraced him completely, turning the moment into one of the most memorable championship coronations in recent memory.

Now heading into SummerSlam as Undisputed WWE Champion, Zayn’s reign is already generating significant buzz. The question of who steps up as his first serious challenger is one of the more compelling storyline threads WWE has heading into the summer.
