Royce Keys Opens Up About Crashing the WWE Title Picture: ‘I Don’t Think Anyone Expected That’

Royce Keys is keenly aware of how his brief but eventful WWE tenure has unfolded — and he’s using every unexpected moment as fuel.

The former AEW star recently reflected on his sudden insertion into the Undisputed WWE Championship conversation last month, specifically the events of the May 15 episode of SmackDown. During what was scheduled as a contract signing between Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER ahead of their Clash in Italy match on May 31, Keys stepped in and threw his own name into contention for a shot at ‘The American Nightmare.’ That bold move led to a one-on-one match between Keys and GUNTHER later that same night to determine who would challenge Rhodes in Turin — a match GUNTHER ultimately won after interference from Solo Sikoa and The MFTs.

What made the moment particularly striking was the context: Keys had competed in just four SmackDown matches at that point. Inserting himself into a title contender’s bout at that stage was a genuine surprise, and Keys acknowledged as much in a recent interview with Josh Hennig.

“When I came out and told Cody I want to be the one that challenges him for the WWE Championship, I don’t think anyone expected that,” Keys said. “It’s just taking advantage of any and every opportunity. It’s about making moments and what can I do to elevate myself even higher.”

Keys also noted that, roughly six months into his WWE run, the novelty of simply being there has given way to a different kind of drive. “Every week it’s rewarding for me,” he said. “I figured we’re past the dream part. I just hit six months here right? So we’re past the dream now, it’s time to just keep working even 10 times harder… Any time I’m on that screen I got to put my stamp down.”

Keys has been candid about the long road it took to reach WWE, and that journey clearly informs the urgency he brings to every appearance. With Clash in Italy set for May 31 and GUNTHER now locked in against Cody Rhodes, Keys finds himself on the outside looking in — but if his SmackDown track record is any indication, he won’t stay there quietly for long.
