Ricky Saints punched his ticket to WWE Night of Champions in a big way, picking up a victory over Carmelo Hayes on the June 19 edition of SmackDown to secure a United States Championship match against Trick Williams at the premium live event.
The win was no accident of timing — WWE had already announced heading into that SmackDown that the winner of Saints’ match would receive the title opportunity at Night of Champions. Saints delivered when it counted, getting past Hayes to set up what figures to be a high-profile showdown with the reigning U.S. Champion.
Trick Williams has been one of the standout performers on SmackDown since making the move to the blue brand, and the United States Championship has been a centerpiece of his run. Saints, meanwhile, has been building momentum and now gets the biggest singles opportunity of his WWE tenure on one of the company’s marquee international events.
Carmelo Hayes, for his part, came up short in what was a meaningful opportunity of his own — a win there would have thrust him into the title picture, but instead it’s Saints who moves forward. The loss continues a difficult stretch for Hayes as he looks to find his footing.
With Night of Champions now locked in as the destination, all eyes will be on whether Saints can capitalize on his SmackDown performance and dethrone Trick Williams when the stakes are at their highest.
