Rey Mysterio’s AAA Reign of Order Is the Best Booking Story Nobody’s Talking About

Rey Mysterio’s AAA Reign of Order Is the Best Booking Story Nobody’s Talking About

The authority-figure gimmick has been run into the ground for decades — but Rey Mysterio suspending Omos and stacking title contenders is quietly making it work again.

Everybody’s arguing about Kenny Omega putting Will Ospreay through a table, and fair enough — that’s a marquee moment. But the most quietly compelling booking on the entire board this week is a masked legend behind a desk in AAA, and I don’t think that’s getting the attention it deserves. Rey Mysterio as AAA General Manager is doing something the authority-figure gimmick almost never does: it’s actually working.

Let me be blunt. The “heel-or-babyface boss” trope is one of the most exhausted ideas in wrestling. We’ve had two decades of on-screen authorities abusing power, screwing over faces, and eating up TV time that should’ve gone to the people who actually wrestle. So when a promotion hands the clipboard to a 50-year-old icon, my instinct is to groan. AAA earned the opposite reaction from me this week.

Why This Version Doesn’t Suck

The difference is that Mysterio is using the role to generate matches instead of to insert himself into them. Look at the actual output. He suspended Omos indefinitely after the Nigerian Giant went on an attacking spree, framing himself as the guy trying to keep the lights on while chaos threatens to swallow the roster. That’s the correct use of an authority figure — a stabilizing presence the audience roots for, not a smug obstacle they endure.

Then, instead of coasting on that heat, he immediately turned around and did the productive thing: he built the card. Mysterio announced a Gauntlet Match to crown the next Reina de Reinas challenger, giving the women’s division a clean, high-stakes path to the top. That’s the whole job. Create stakes, create opportunity, get out of the way. A GM who makes matches you want to watch is worth ten who cut ten-minute promos about how much power they have.

The Suspension Angle Is Smarter Than It Looks

Here’s what I appreciate most about the Omos beat. Suspending a monster heel is a low-cost, high-value story. It protects the giant — he doesn’t have to job, he just gets “removed” by an authority who fears him — while giving fans the satisfaction of consequences. It also creates an obvious return: the day Omos comes back to settle the score with Mysterio, or the babyface who eventually challenges the ruling, that’s a moment the promotion banked weeks in advance. That’s foresight. Most bookers spend heat the second they generate it. AAA is saving some.

And it lands harder because it’s Rey. This isn’t a suit nobody believes in. This is a man who has been putting over younger talent for thirty years, who carries genuine moral authority with a lucha audience. When Mysterio says the giant is a danger to the locker room, you buy it, because his entire career has been about the little guy standing up to the monster. The gimmick is an extension of his actual legacy, not a costume he’s wearing.

Contrast that with how these angles usually go. The typical GM story is about the GM. This one is about the roster the GM is managing — the tag division fighting for shots, the women’s title picture opening up, the monster who has to earn his way back in. Mysterio is the frame, not the picture. That’s the entire trick, and it’s stunning how few promotions ever figure it out.

Do I think this can go sideways? Sure. The moment Rey starts booking himself into main events or the authority storyline eats the whole show, it curdles into everything we’ve complained about since the Attitude Era. But right now, in the middle of a stacked news week where the discourse is all AEW dream matches and coverage-collapse think pieces, AAA is running a fundamentally sound, character-driven authority angle that’s building future matches instead of hogging present ones.

That deserves more than a highlights recap. It deserves credit.

Am I overrating a guy with a clipboard, or is AAA quietly booking the smartest authority angle in years? Drop your take in the comments.
