Paul Heyman has revealed that former WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon initially pushed back on the now-iconic “Tribal Chief” moniker when it was proposed for Roman Reigns following his 2020 return.

Reigns made his comeback at SummerSlam 2020 after an extended absence, aligning with Heyman as his Special Counsel and debuting a heel persona that would go on to define the next several years of WWE programming. According to Heyman, however, McMahon had a different vision for the character’s name when it was first being developed, meaning the “Tribal Chief” label wasn’t a foregone conclusion. Heyman, who has long been credited as a key creative architect behind Reigns’ transformation, disclosed McMahon’s initial resistance in recent comments.
