Paul Heyman Reveals John Cena Told Vince McMahon He Could Main Event WrestleMania With Cesaro, Admits Both He and Axel Were Used as Placeholders

Paul Heyman has pulled back the curtain on two of his most high-profile — yet ultimately unfulfilled — WWE partnerships, explaining why neither Cesaro nor Curtis Axel were ever positioned to reach their full potential as his on-screen clients.

Appearing on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Heyman was candid about the reality behind both relationships. On Cesaro, he revealed that the praise coming from within the locker room was as strong as it gets — including from John Cena himself. “You look at Cesaro, and he checked, especially at that moment in time, he checked every box to become a top star,” Heyman said. “Everyone who got into the ring with him came back into Gorilla, saying, ‘Give me him.’ Everyone.”

Heyman went further, recounting a specific moment when Cena went directly to Vince McMahon after working with Cesaro on television. “I remember John Cena worked with him on television and came back and looked at Vince and said, ‘I could main event WrestleMania with him.’ And probably could have, and should have.”

Despite that ringing endorsement, Heyman acknowledged the uncomfortable truth: Cesaro’s role alongside him existed primarily to give Heyman a reason to be on television after Brock Lesnar’s hiatus following WrestleMania XXX. With Lesnar off the road after conquering The Undertaker’s undefeated streak, the company needed a vehicle to keep Heyman in front of audiences. “Cesaro became the excuse to see me say the line,” Heyman admitted bluntly.

The same utilitarian logic applied to Curtis Axel, whom Heyman described as being cast in a disposable role designed to feed babyface opponent CM Punk — not to be built into a genuine star. “Curtis Axel was cast as Paul Heyman guy, generic Paul Heyman guy,” he said, adding that once the Punk program concluded, there was simply no plan in place to push Axel further, and Axel lacked the leverage to create his own momentum out of it.

It’s a striking double admission. Both men were talent Heyman clearly respected, and in Cesaro’s case, one of the most decorated workers in WWE at the time had the full endorsement of its biggest star. Now known as Claudio Castagnoli and thriving in AEW, that WrestleMania main event with Cena remains one of wrestling’s great what-ifs — a match that had a genuine champion in its corner but never got the chance to happen.
