Nikki Bella Makes Surprise WWE Return On SmackDown

Nikki Bella is back in WWE. The former Divas Champion made a surprise appearance on the July 24 episode of SmackDown, coming to the aid of her twin sister Brie Bella and Paige after they were jumped by Fatal Influence.

The attack came after Brie picked up a singles win over Lainey Reid via rollup. Once the bell rang, the rest of Fatal Influence swarmed the ring to punish Brie for the loss, with Paige also getting caught in the assault. That’s when Nikki’s music hit, and she rushed down to help even the numbers and clear the ring alongside her sister and Paige.

Nikki has been out of the in-ring picture for years, having largely stepped away from full-time competition, so her music hitting was the kind of moment that pops an arena and a live audience alike. Her name reportedly had been floated in WWE’s creative discussions before this appearance, suggesting this wasn’t a total spur-of-the-moment addition but something the company had been considering for a while.

The return also slots neatly into a story that’s already been building. Brie Bella has been back on WWE television in an active in-ring role, and Paige’s alliance with the Bellas against Fatal Influence has given SmackDown’s women’s division a clear multi-woman feud with real stakes. Adding Nikki to that mix gives the babyface side a numbers advantage and a legacy name to lean on, while also reuniting the Bella Twins as an on-screen tag team for the first time in a meaningful way in years.

It’s worth remembering the Bellas’ history carries a lot of weight with the SmackDown audience — Total Divas, their Hall of Fame induction, and their run as one of the most recognizable acts in the company’s history all make Nikki’s return more than just another surprise cameo. If WWE is looking to freshen up the women’s division heading into the back half of the summer, pairing legacy stars like the Bellas with a heel faction like Fatal Influence is a tried-and-true way to generate crowd heat quickly.

What remains to be seen is how much of a role Nikki will play going forward. Her career has included lengthy absences due to injuries and life outside the ring, so it’s unclear whether this is a one-off assist or the start of a more consistent presence. Given that her involvement was reportedly discussed internally beforehand, though, it wouldn’t be surprising if WWE has bigger plans for her alongside Brie and Paige in the weeks ahead.

For now, Fatal Influence has a fresh problem on their hands, and SmackDown’s women’s division just got a lot more crowded — and a lot more interesting.
