Nick Aldis to Make WWE In-Ring Debut Against GUNTHER at SummerSlam

Nick Aldis is trading his SmackDown General Manager duties for wrestling boots, at least for one night. Aldis is set to step away from his authority role to face GUNTHER at SummerSlam, marking his first-ever match inside a WWE ring and ending an in-ring absence that dates back to 2023.

The match has already caught the attention of Seth Rollins, who discussed the bout on Busted Open. Rollins said the GUNTHER-Aldis pairing stands out to him on a stacked card precisely because nobody quite knows what to expect from Aldis after his layoff. He contrasted it with other high-profile SummerSlam matchups, like the expected war between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk, or the intensity of a Hell in a Cell bout, saying those competitors have already shown fans their ceiling. Aldis, by comparison, is a question mark.

“You know that Hell in a Cell’s probably gonna be a war, you know what you’re gonna get with [CM] Punk and Cody [Rhodes]. You’ve seen them at their peak. I think there’s the mystery of what does Nick Aldis have in the tank,” Rollins said, adding that Aldis has looked in noticeably good shape during his weekly SmackDown appearances.

Rollins also revealed a detail that caught him off guard: Aldis, at 39, is actually younger than the 40-year-old Rollins. “He’s still younger than I am actually which shocked me. I didn’t know that,” Rollins said, calling the upcoming match “really his WWE debut” and noting it’s happening on one of the promotion’s biggest stages.

Aldis built his reputation over a lengthy career outside WWE, including stints as a top champion in promotions like NWA and TNA, before joining WWE in a backstage authority capacity. Fans have long speculated about whether he’d ever step back between the ropes for the company, and SummerSlam now gives him that platform in dramatic fashion — opposite GUNTHER, one of the most dominant in-ring forces on the current roster.

For Rollins, the intrigue around Aldis is just a side note to his own massive assignment. He’s slated to close out Night Two of SummerSlam in a challenge for Roman Reigns’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but as his comments show, he’ll be watching the Aldis-GUNTHER match with real curiosity like everyone else.
