Mistico & Mascara Dorada Win ROH Tag Team Titles at CMLL Viernes Espectacular

The ROH Tag Team Championship has new holders, and they’re based in Mexico City. Mistico and Mascara Dorada captured the titles in the main event of CMLL’s Friday night Viernes Espectacular show, defeating Sammy Guevara and The Beast Mortos in what shaped up to be a significant cross-promotional moment for both ROH and CMLL.

The finish saw Mascara Dorada take Guevara out of the equation in spectacular fashion, wiping him out with a middle-rope shooting star press to the floor. With Guevara neutralized on the outside, Mistico was able to lock in a submission hold on Mortos, forcing the tap and securing the victory — and the belts — for the CMLL veterans.

The win is a notable one for both Mistico and Mascara Dorada, two of the most accomplished luchadors in CMLL’s current roster. Mistico has long been one of the promotion’s marquee names, while Mascara Dorada spent years working for WWE’s NXT and main roster before returning to Mexico and re-establishing himself as a top-tier performer. Holding ROH gold gives both men a foothold in the broader wrestling landscape beyond lucha libre.

For Guevara and Mortos, the loss ends their run as a unit atop the ROH tag division. The pairing of an AEW fixture in Guevara with a hard-hitting monster in Mortos made for an unconventional team, and their title reign helped reinforce the working relationship between ROH and CMLL.

What the new champions do with the titles — and whether they defend them on ROH programming stateside — remains to be seen.
