Michael Cole Urges Patience With Sami Zayn’s WWE Story

Michael Cole is asking WWE fans to trust the process when it comes to Sami Zayn’s current arc. Zayn’s brief reign as WWE Champion came to an end on the July 6 episode of Raw, when he dropped the title to CM Punk just nine days after shocking the wrestling world with his win at Night of Champions. The quick turnaround left a portion of the fanbase frustrated, with many feeling Zayn’s title run was cut short before it ever really got going.

Speaking with Sal Licata, Cole addressed that frustration directly, framing Zayn’s championship loss as part of a longer story rather than a final outcome. His message was straightforward: let the story play out before passing judgment on how WWE is handling one of its most popular babyfaces.

Zayn’s win at Night of Champions was one of the more unexpected title changes WWE has produced in recent memory, and it generated plenty of goodwill from fans who have followed his career-long journey from underdog to top star. Losing the belt so quickly to Punk, one of the promotion’s biggest names, understandably reignited old debates about how WWE booking treats fan-favorite underdogs once they finally reach the mountaintop.

Cole’s comments suggest WWE views this chapter of Zayn’s career as an ongoing narrative rather than a self-contained title reign, and that there’s more planned for the character down the line. Exactly what that means for Zayn going forward wasn’t detailed, but the message from Cole is clear: the promotion wants fans to withhold judgment until the fuller picture comes into focus.

Whether that patience pays off remains to be seen, but with Punk now holding the title and Zayn presumably still in the championship picture, there’s plenty of runway left for this story to develop in the weeks ahead.
