MLW finally answered the question that has hung over the promotion since the start of the year: Josef Samael is the Serpent, the shadowy figure who has been directing CONTRA Unit’s campaign of terror against Mads Krule Krugger. The reveal came during a chaotic close to Saturday night’s MLW Fusion, taped at Festival Hall in Charleston, South Carolina.

The story dates back to January, when Krugger broke away from CONTRA Unit after refusing to keep carrying out the Serpent’s missions in secret. He declared he would compete as world champion on his own terms rather than serve an unseen master, a decision that made him a target. CONTRA Unit answered that defiance at Battle RIOT, where Krugger was stripped of the MLW World Championship, beaten down, sealed in a body bag, and left for dead in the swamps.

Krugger didn’t stay down. Shotzi Blackheart tracked him through her monster hunt and helped bring him back, and the two formed an unlikely partnership that grew into the CONTRA MERCS alongside The Good Brothers — a direct rebellion against the organization Krugger once served as a masked mercenary. That defiance escalated into a full-blown CONTRA Civil War, with the still-unseen Serpent continuing to send propaganda broadcasts and reinforcements, including Big Damo, brought in specifically to take Krugger out.

That collision finally happened Saturday night, as Big Damo and Krugger met for the first time in a heavyweight brawl that spiraled out of control when CONTRA Unit flooded the ring — KUSHIDA, Ikuro Kwon, Okumura, Kananga, and the SENTAI Death Squad all closing in on Krugger. The lights went out, a fireball erupted, and Krugger was left writhing as his mask and face appeared to melt in the aftermath. When the smoke cleared, Josef Samael stood in the center of the ring, smiling over the carnage as CONTRA Unit surrounded him.

Samael’s presence gives a face and a name to a mystery MLW has been building patiently for months, and it retroactively reframes everything CONTRA Unit has done since Krugger’s rebellion began. Samael originally arrived with CONTRA Unit back in 2019 before disappearing from the promotion in 2021, so his reemergence as the group’s secret architect plays as both a payoff for longtime viewers and a reset for the entire angle. It also raises the stakes considerably for Krugger, Shotzi Blackheart, and The Good Brothers, who now know exactly who they’re fighting rather than an anonymous voice barking orders from the shadows.

What happens to Krugger after the fireball attack, and how the CONTRA MERCS regroup against a fully unmasked Serpent, remains to be seen. But MLW has made clear that CONTRA Unit isn’t retreating — if anything, Samael’s return signals the group is doubling down, with the black flag raised and a very public target on Krugger’s back.
