Joe Gacy Details Vince McMahon’s Reaction To NXT 2.0 Promo Backlash

Joe Gacy has opened up about one of the most nerve-wracking moments of his WWE run, revealing that Vince McMahon initially reacted negatively to outside media coverage of a controversial NXT promo before reversing course once he actually watched the segment himself.

The moment traces back to the September 21, 2021 episode of NXT, where Gacy delivered a promo loaded with buzzwords like “safe space,” “microaggressions,” and “male privilege.” The segment, part of the character work tied to the NXT 2.0 relaunch, drew attention well beyond the wrestling world, including a Fox News piece headlined “WWE pins woke left with controversial new wrestler.”

Speaking on Chris Van Vliet’s show, Gacy said that kind of outside attention did not sit well with McMahon at first. According to Gacy, Shawn Michaels called him shortly after the coverage broke to deliver unwelcome news. “The word is, this is when Vince McMahon was still in charge, he saw the headline and got very upset,” Gacy said. “Shawn Michaels called me and said, ‘Hey, Vince is not too happy with what happened. Unfortunately, we’re gonna have to take you off TV for a little bit.’”

But the fallout didn’t last. Gacy recalled being called into Michaels’ office soon after, where the mood had completely shifted. He said Michaels was working with one of NXT’s head writers, with Bruce Prichard reportedly on the phone, hammering out a new promo for him to deliver that same day. The explanation, according to Gacy, was that McMahon had gone back and actually watched the original segment rather than just reacting to the headline — and had come away impressed.

“So it turns out Vince saw the headline and kind of freaked out, but then he actually went back and watched it and apparently loved it,” Gacy said. “So he was on board after he actually watched the actual promo.”

What followed was a scramble Gacy described as one of the most stressful experiences of his career. He was handed a three-page promo and given roughly 30 minutes to absorb it before heading out live. “I went out there and I did it. It probably wasn’t word for word, but apparently Vince was happy with what I did,” he said, adding that nothing WWE later threw at him ever matched that level of pressure.

The story offers a small but telling window into how WWE creative decisions could shift on a dime under McMahon’s leadership, particularly when a segment generated unexpected media attention. It also underscores the tightrope NXT 2.0 walked in its early days as the brand leaned into edgier, more provocative character work aimed at a younger demographic.
