Eric Bischoff Wanted to Modernize Sheamus During His 2019 WWE Run

Eric Bischoff has opened up about the creative vision he had for Sheamus during his short-lived tenure as SmackDown Executive Director in 2019 — and it was a significant departure from what fans had grown accustomed to seeing from the Irish veteran.

Appearing on his 83 Weeks podcast, Bischoff revealed that Sheamus was one of the first WWE Superstars to seek him out after he came aboard SmackDown. The two built a solid rapport, and their conversations quickly turned to how Sheamus could evolve his on-screen character.

Bischoff made clear he was a fan of the performer, but felt the presentation had leaned too heavily on familiar Irish tropes for too long. “I loved his character. I love the idea of Sheamus. I love the Sheamus character, but I was tired of seeing the parody of the typical Irish character,” he said.

His proposed solution wasn’t a wholesale reinvention — rather, a modernization. “I saw so much more in him. I would have made his character more relatable and current,” Bischoff explained. “I felt like the kind of animated, typical badass Irish guy had been done to death.”

Crucially, Bischoff wasn’t looking to strip away what made Sheamus compelling. He wanted the attitude and the edge to remain intact, just without the exaggerated cultural shorthand. “I would have liked to have seen Sheamus come back with the same attitude, the same motivations, the same points of view on things, but in a less animated kind of lucky charms type characterization,” he said.

None of it ever got off the ground. Bischoff’s run overseeing SmackDown’s creative direction lasted only a few months before it came to an end, leaving his plans for Sheamus — and whatever else he had in mind — firmly in the what-if column. Given how well Sheamus has connected with audiences over the years, the idea of a stripped-down, grittier version of the character remains an intriguing road not taken.
