Cruz Montana, the NXT persona of former AEW star Mike Santana, says he isn’t putting a clock on how long he’ll stick around in developmental. One week removed from his in-ring debut on NXT, Montana addressed his future with the brand during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, making clear that his priority right now is soaking up as much knowledge as he can rather than rushing toward a main roster call-up.

Montana debuted for NXT on Tuesday, July 21, and got his first chance to speak on WWE television during the July 28 episode of the show. When asked directly how long he’d like to remain in NXT before making the jump to Raw or SmackDown, he made it clear there’s no exit strategy in mind — his focus is on development, not the calendar.

That mindset lines up with how WWE has increasingly used NXT over the past several years: not as a holding pattern, but as a legitimate finishing school for talent brought in from outside the company. Performers who arrive with substantial name recognition elsewhere — as Santana did during his run in AEW, where he held tag team gold and built a reputation as a hard-hitting, high-intensity worker — don’t always need the seasoning in the traditional sense. But WWE has shown a preference for letting outside talent get comfortable with its presentation, its schedule, and its audience before thrusting them into the spotlight on the main roster.

For Montana specifically, the move to NXT also offers a fresh start under a new name and, presumably, a refined character, after years of being closely associated with a specific persona in AEW.
