CM Punk vs. Sami Zayn in Mexico City Is the Rivalry SmackDown Needed

Sami Zayn as a heel champion swinging his belt at everyone in the locker room is the most interesting version of the WWE Title picture in ages — and Punk is the perfect first target.

Give me Sami Zayn as a paranoid, belt-swinging heel champion for as long as WWE can possibly stretch it. That’s the takeaway from this week’s SmackDown, and if you slept on it because the internet was busy arguing about something else, you missed the most compelling character turn on the show.

The setup is beautifully simple. Sami holds the WWE Title, and instead of settling into a comfortable babyface reign, he’s using the belt as a weapon on everyone in his orbit — Punk, Kevin Owens, Gunther, Finn Balor. That’s not a guy defending a title. That’s a guy who finally got the thing he chased his entire career and is terrified of losing it. There is a decade of Sami Zayn story baked into that image, and WWE knows it.

Why Punk Is the Right First Challenger

Then Punk beats Johnny Gargano and calls his shot for Mexico City, and suddenly this thing has a spine. Because of everyone Sami cracked with that belt, Punk is the one who makes the most narrative sense to answer first — and the least sense to underestimate.

Think about the contrast. Sami is the emotional guy, the one who wears every insecurity on his face. Punk is the ice-cold operator who talks a man out of his own confidence before the bell even rings. You put those two temperaments in a ring and you don’t need a convoluted six-way story to sell it. You need two microphones and a camera. That’s the kind of clean, character-driven main-event booking that far too much modern TV forgets is even an option.

And the Mexico City setting isn’t just window dressing. WWE has leaned hard into international stadium-level events, and a title match built specifically for that crowd raises the temperature in a way a random arena Tuesday never could. Sami has always been an electric performer in front of a hot, engaged audience. Drop him into that environment as a heel who’s spent weeks bullying the roster, and the crowd does half the storytelling for you.

The Real Test Is Whether They Keep Him Cornered

Here’s where I get nervous, though, and I’ll say it plainly: WWE has a bad habit of finding a genuinely interesting heel dynamic and then softening it within a month because the crowd loves the guy too much. Sami Zayn is one of the most naturally sympathetic performers on the entire roster. The temptation to let him “only” be a heel to the boys while staying a wink-wink fan favorite will be enormous.

Resist it. The most valuable thing about this run is the version where Sami is genuinely unlikeable in his desperation — where his paranoia curdles into cruelty and you actually want Punk to take the belt off him. If they commit to that, this main-event scene has legs deep into the fall. If they blink, it’s just another feel-good pit stop.

Compare it to what’s happening elsewhere on the shows this week. There’s plenty going on — from title defenses and debuts stacking up on AEW Collision to TNA cracking open its X-Division picture — but none of it hinges on a single character choice the way this Sami storyline does. Most of that other stuff is match-driven. This is character-driven, and character-driven stories are what create real, lasting stars.

Punk and Sami in Mexico City could be a body-of-work classic or a missed opportunity, and the difference comes down entirely to whether creative trusts the darker version of Sami Zayn they’ve already started drawing. My money says the match delivers. My worry is what they do with the aftermath.

Am I overrating a belt-swinging angle, or is this the most interesting the WWE Title has felt in months? Sound off in the comments.
