Andre Chance Details How Chase U Character Was Born: Road Dogg’s Laughter Led to Shawn Michaels Comparison to Bobby Knight

Before Chase University ever opened its doors in NXT, the concept nearly didn’t exist at all — and the version that did make it to television looked almost nothing like the original pitch.

Andre Chance, formerly known as Andre Chase in WWE, has opened up about how the beloved Chase U character came together, tracing it back to a promo class exercise during the NXT 2.0 era. Speaking on Duke Hanson’s Between Two Jobs show, Chance explained that Road Dogg — who was part of creative at the time — issued a directive to everyone in promo class: come in with a fully defined character, no exceptions.

Chance leaned into something he already knew. WWE had originally approached him about a coaching role rather than an in-ring one, so he decided to build from that. His first attempt at the character was a heel who offered unsolicited advice to everyone around him. He planted a feedback box in the middle of the ring, telling his fellow performers he’d collect their questions since he didn’t share a locker room with them — a brilliantly condescending touch.

The second week is where everything clicked. Chance returned to open the box, only to find the responses were anything but respectful. That’s when he snapped.

“I f**king kicked the box over and I slammed it and I was like, ‘These kids don’t wanna show me respect!'” Chance recalled. “I just lost it. And Road Dogg is dying laughing.”

Road Dogg brought the promo to Shawn Michaels, who immediately saw something in the meltdown. A college basketball fan himself, Michaels said the blowup reminded him of legendary — and notoriously volatile — Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight, known for throwing chairs and erupting on the sideline. From that comparison, the character’s signature look and energy took shape.

Chase U would go on to become one of NXT’s most organically over acts, with Chance at the center of a faction that connected with fans in a way few developmental concepts ever do. The group has since disbanded, with most members no longer with the company. It’s a creative origin story that started with a fake suggestion box and ended with one of the more memorable characters NXT has produced in recent years.
