Sami Zayn Reportedly Winning Over Backstage Doubters as Champion

Sami Zayn’s second reign as Undisputed WWE Champion is reportedly changing minds behind the scenes, with internal perception shifting in his favor after weeks of strong performances in the role.

Zayn’s first run with the title ended after just nine days back in July, leaving plenty of skepticism about whether he’d ever get another crack at WWE’s top prize. That skepticism has reportedly carried over into his current reign, with some within the company questioning whether he was the right choice to hold the championship again. But according to a backstage report, those doubts have started to fade as Zayn closes in on two months as champion.

The timing lines up with some of the best character work of Zayn’s career. On the October 30 episode of SmackDown, he successfully defended the title against United States Champion Trick Williams, who had beaten him twice earlier in the year, including at WrestleMania 42. Before that match, Zayn delivered a fiery backstage promo addressing what he called the ‘immeasurable disrespect’ he’s faced from GM Nick Aldis, World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and Williams himself, all of whom have publicly questioned whether he’d last as champion. Zayn declared himself the most versatile and adaptable superstar in WWE history and insisted he’s done waiting for recognition.

That promo, paired with his performances in the ring, appears to be the driver behind the shifting internal sentiment. It’s easy to see why: Zayn has leaned fully into a heel persona built on perceived slights and chip-on-the-shoulder motivation, and it’s given him some of the sharpest mic work of his run.

The next test comes at Crown Jewel 2026, where Zayn is set to face Reigns in a champion-versus-champion main event. Beating Williams to get there was no small feat given their recent history, and a win over Reigns would mark the signature victory of this title reign. Unlike Reigns, who looks like a safe bet to carry the World Heavyweight Championship all the way to WrestleMania 43, Zayn’s path forward on SmackDown is far murkier. Penta, CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are all circling the Undisputed WWE Championship, and any one of them could end this reign on short notice.

Still, if the backstage report holds up and Zayn keeps delivering at this level, the idea of him carrying the title deep into 2027 no longer seems far-fetched. Two months ago, after the nine-day disaster, that would have sounded almost unthinkable. Now it’s a legitimate conversation, and Crown Jewel will go a long way toward settling it.
