Goldberg Opens Up On Rocky Start With Triple H: ‘We Couldn’t Stand Each Other’

Bill Goldberg has offered a candid look at his relationship with Triple H — one that began with genuine hostility but ultimately landed in a place of mutual respect.

Appearing on the Going Ringside podcast, Goldberg reflected on the tension that defined his early days in WWE after signing with the company in March 2003. The two men shared the same agent and had already clashed before Goldberg ever set foot in a WWE ring — a dynamic made considerably more complicated by the fact that Triple H was married to Vince McMahon’s daughter.

“Oh, it was different at the time because he and I couldn’t stand each other, really,” Goldberg said. “And we were both represented by the same agent, and we had had a confrontation prior to me going to the WWE, and then, oh, by the way, he’s married to Vince McMahon’s daughter. So, I mean, it was kind of like me walking into an unwinnable situation. But I think business prevailed, and truthfully, at the end of the day, he’s a good guy.”

Goldberg’s first WWE run lasted only a year before he departed. When he returned to the company in 2016, the landscape had shifted considerably — both men were in very different places in their careers, and any lingering animosity appears to have been set aside in favor of getting things done. Goldberg has previously noted that a conversation with Triple H played a key role in setting his retirement match in motion.

That sendoff came at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event last July, where Goldberg challenged GUNTHER for the World Heavyweight Championship in what turned out to be his final in-ring appearance. It was a fitting bookend for a career that included a World Heavyweight Championship reign and two Universal Championship reigns during his second tenure with the company, along with a Hall of Fame induction in 2018.

For Goldberg, the evolution of his relationship with Triple H seems to mirror the broader arc of his WWE career — a rough beginning that eventually gave way to something more productive.
