WWE Championship Picture Heating Up: Six Title Storylines To Watch Before SummerSlam 2026

By PW Exclusive Pipeline·June 21, 2026

With SummerSlam 2026 set for August 1–2 at Minneapolis, Minnesota, the road to WWE’s marquee summer event is shaping up to be a busy one on both Raw and SmackDown. Several championship stories are already in motion, and the coming weeks could see significant title changes before the biggest summer card of the year.

At the top of the card, GUNTHER remains on a collision course with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. Their rematch stems directly from a controversial finish at WWE Clash In Italy 2026, where Rhodes retained via a pinfall that replays showed GUNTHER’s foot was under the ropes. With a rematch locked in — potentially as soon as the June 19 SmackDown or at Night of Champions 2026 — The Ring General has a compelling case to finally claim the title he’s been chasing since WrestleMania 42.

On the women’s side, Rhea Ripley’s reign as WWE Women’s Champion is in jeopardy after she suffered an apparent knee injury during her win over Jade Cargill at Clash In Italy, sidelining her in the weeks since. That development has opened the door for contenders including Charlotte Flair, who would be eyeing a 15th world title reign.

The Intercontinental Championship scene has also been given a jolt by the return of Chad Gable. After competing at AAA Noche de Los Grandes 2026 — where a Mask vs. Mask Match ended with his identity revealed as the man behind the Original El Grande Americano character — Gable is now back on WWE television and appears to be setting his sights on Penta’s Intercontinental Title.

In the tag division, Street Profits are gunning for The Vision’s World Tag Team Championships. Logan Paul tore his triceps during the May 23 Saturday Night’s Main Event match in which he and Austin Theory retained over Street Profits, and Theory subsequently attacked Angelo Dawkins with a steel chair. With Dawkins healthy again, a June 22 Raw showdown appears to be in the offing.

The Women’s Tag Team Championships and Women’s United States Title also have compelling challengers lurking. Fatal Influence — Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid — dropped a non-title match to champions Paige and Brie Bella on the June 12 SmackDown, while Jade Cargill, already a Women’s Champion, Queen of the Ring winner, and two-time Women’s Tag Team Champion, has been circling Tiffany Stratton’s Women’s United States Championship.

With multiple rematch clauses, injury vacancies, and simmering feuds all converging at once, the championship picture ahead of SummerSlam 2026 is as unsettled as it’s been all year.
