Maxwell Jacob Friedman has given himself a new title, and it has nothing to do with any actual AEW championship. MJF has started referring to himself as the “One True Champion” of All Elite Wrestling, a self-appointed distinction he’s backing up by carrying around what he calls the “Big Burberry Belt” — a designer strap standing in for gold he insists validates his superiority over everyone else on the roster.

It’s pure MJF: a title with no sanctioning body, no title match required, and no one but himself to award it. Fans quickly noticed the wordplay doesn’t quite work the way MJF might want — “One True Champion” shortens to an acronym that plenty of viewers found amusing for reasons that have nothing to do with wrestling supremacy.

None of that seems to matter to Friedman, who has built his entire AEW run on manufacturing his own hype even when the actual championship picture says otherwise. This is a wrestler who once held the AEW World Championship for well over a year, turning egomania into one of the promotion’s signature acts. Even without gold around his waist at the moment, MJF clearly isn’t interested in waiting for AEW to hand him a reason to feel important — he’s simply declaring himself the man to beat and daring the audience, and the rest of the roster, to argue otherwise.

The Burberry Belt bit fits snugly into the character work MJF has leaned on for years: needling the line between legitimate main-event credibility and outright self-parody. Whether it’s a genuine step toward a future title pursuit or simply the latest chapter in his ongoing heel act, it’s generating exactly the kind of reaction MJF thrives on — mockery included.

What remains to be seen is whether this “One True Champion” gimmick is a standalone bit or the first beat of a longer program pointed at AEW’s actual World Championship picture. MJF has never been shy about inserting himself into title conversations, real or invented, and his history suggests this self-crowning won’t stay a joke for long if he has anything to say about it. For now, though, the internet’s verdict on the acronym might be getting more attention than the belt itself.

Either way, MJF forcing his name — and his fabricated hardware — back into the conversation is a reminder of how effectively he can manufacture relevance out of thin air. Expect him to keep leaning into it until AEW gives him a real reason to stop.
