The Rock Opens Up About Pursuing Music Career

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says he’s actively exploring a deeper move into music, adding another chapter to a career that has already spanned pro wrestling and Hollywood stardom.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson discussed his role as executive producer on the album “Moana: Voices Across the Ocean,” a project he worked on alongside his wife, Lauren Hashian. Johnson also co-wrote and performs a track on the album called “Your Dad,” which he described as a personal tribute to his three daughters.

Asked directly whether music could become a bigger part of his future plans, Johnson confirmed that conversations are underway. “I’m exploring that now, and I appreciate you asking that,” he said. “As you roll along in life, I’ve been real fortunate to be part of some really cool projects, and love it. But music has always been such an anchor for me, and very specifically in genres that I love, like country music, traditional country music. And we’re exploring that now.”

Music has actually been part of Johnson’s story for decades. Long before WWE or Hollywood, he dreamed as a teenager of becoming a country singer, citing influences like Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, George Jones, Merle Haggard and Johnny Paycheck. WWE fans got glimpses of that musical side during his memorable Rock Concert segments, and his voice work on the animated Moana films — including the hit song “You’re Welcome” — introduced him to an even wider audience.

Johnson framed his growing interest in music as part of a broader shift in how he’s choosing projects these days, prioritizing passion over box-office pressure. “I’ve reached this point in my life and in my career where, honestly, Brian, when I wake up in the morning, I swing my legs out of bed, and whatever the thing is that I’m doing, I wanna feel like I’m just running towards it,” he said. “And the most gratifying things we do are when it’s for us, because we have enough pressure to deliver for so many other entities.”

He drew a clear distinction between his commercial blockbuster work and something like “Your Dad,” which carries no expectation of chart success or streaming numbers. “This song, for me, is just a song to my daughters,” Johnson explained. “Where there’s no pressure of an expectation to deliver something that, ‘Well, how are the sales, and how’s the box office? And how’s the streams?’ It’s just from me to them.”

The comments come as Johnson continues to diversify his on-screen output, following the live-action Moana remake and his dramatic turn in “The Smashing Machine,” a notable departure from the blockbuster action-hero roles that made him one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

For wrestling fans, Johnson’s name will always be tied first to his run as one of WWE’s most electrifying WWE Champions and the sport’s most successful crossover star. But his latest remarks suggest music may be the next arena where he tries to leave his own mark, separate from the ring and the box office alike. Whether that turns into a full country album or something else entirely remains to be seen, but it’s clear The Rock isn’t done chasing new creative ground.
