A tribute to the legendary Rougeau wrestling family reportedly turned into a backstage headache for AEW at Redemption, with Jacques Rougeau — best remembered by wrestling fans as WWE’s The Mountie — said to have come close to being removed from the venue entirely.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rougeau had taken it upon himself to produce a video package honoring his family’s wrestling legacy and had told AEW he would handle the project personally. Problems reportedly surfaced once the finished product landed in the company’s hands. The video was said to run far longer than anticipated and contained copyrighted music and footage AEW had no rights to use, along with AI-generated elements that added another layer of complication for a company already wary of legal exposure on live television.

Compounding matters, AEW reportedly didn’t receive the completed video until the day of the show, giving production staff essentially no window to trim it down, clear the rights issues, or scrap it and build something new in its place. Faced with those constraints, AEW ultimately chose not to air the tribute — a decision that reportedly did not sit well with Rougeau once he learned it wouldn’t be shown.

The fallout allegedly escalated backstage to the point where AEW considered pulling Rougeau from the building altogether ahead of the segment meant to honor his family. Neither AEW nor Rougeau has publicly addressed the report.

The Rougeau name carries real weight in pro wrestling history. Jacques and his brother Raymond were a top act in the WWF during the 1980s before Jacques went on to memorable singles runs as The Mountie and Le Bon Bon Jacques Rougeau. Their father, Jacques Rougeau Sr., helped build wrestling in Montreal for decades, making any proper tribute a significant undertaking — and, evidently, a logistically fraught one when the promotion doesn’t control the final product until the last minute.

Stories like this underscore a familiar tension for companies staging nostalgia-driven segments: handing creative control of an emotional tribute to the honoree or their family can be a nice gesture, but it also strips the promotion of the ability to vet content for legal and broadcast standards until it’s often too late to fix. If the account holds up, AEW was left choosing between airing something that could’ve invited copyright trouble or disappointing a wrestling legend on the night meant to celebrate him — not an easy spot for anyone involved.
