Adam Copeland Set For Maple Leaf Pro’s Northern Rising

Adam Copeland is heading north of the border for an indie showcase. The announcement came at the close of Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s Mayhem event on Thursday, July 30, when it was revealed that the AEW Tag Team Champion will appear at MLP Northern Rising on October 3.

The show is scheduled to take place at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, a building better known to longtime wrestling and hockey fans by its former name, Maple Leaf Gardens. The historic building hosted countless WWE, WCW and NWA cards over the decades before its conversion, so booking Copeland there gives Maple Leaf Pro a natural marketing hook and a bit of nostalgia to lean on heading into the fall.

Copeland currently holds AEW’s Tag Team Championship alongside his partner, and his willingness to work independent dates outside of AEW’s schedule isn’t new — the Hall of Famer has made a habit of popping up at indie shows throughout his current AEW run, giving smaller promotions a marquee name to build around while he stays connected to the grassroots scene he came up in decades ago as Canada’s own hometown hero.

For Maple Leaf Pro, landing a star of Copeland’s stature is a significant coup. The promotion has been building momentum on the Canadian independent circuit, and pairing a recognizable AEW champion with the symbolic weight of Maple Leaf Gardens should make Northern Rising one of the bigger dates on their calendar this year. It’s the kind of booking that can move tickets well outside the promotion’s usual audience, drawing in wrestling fans who want to see a name like Copeland work a smaller, more intimate room.

What exactly Copeland will do at the show — whether it’s an in-ring appearance, an autograph and meet-and-greet setup, or something built into a storyline — wasn’t detailed in the announcement.
