The former WWE star has resurfaced on the independent scene, and a recent appearance for FireStar Wrestling in New Jersey has him trending again thanks to an unexpected assist from a ringside announcer.

During the show, Venis worked his familiar over-the-top pelvic taunt right in front of the commentary table, the same shtick that made him a fixture of the “Attitude Era” from 1998 through 2009 as WWE’s resident adult-film-star character. The viral moment comes on the heels of a genuine return to the ring for Sean Morley, the man behind Val Venis. Morley had reportedly believed his wrestling days were behind him before stepping back into the ring on July 23 for ISPW’s Legends of Wrestling Night in Wildwood, New Jersey, where he squared off against Rico Gold. Rather than treating that match as a one-off nostalgia run, Morley came away feeling physically capable of continuing, and he has since started picking up independent bookings while reviving the same character that defined his WWE run.

It’s a notable turn for a performer who, outside of wrestling, has spent recent years focused on cannabis advocacy in Arizona under the “Kaptain Kannabis” banner and making the rounds at fan conventions. Attitude Era veterans returning to indie rings for nostalgia bookings is nothing new, but Venis’ ability to generate a genuine viral moment — not through controversy, but through a simple gag that still lands with both wrestling and non-wrestling audiences — speaks to how enduring that late-90s character work remains.

For independent promotions like FireStar Wrestling and ISPW, bringing in a name like Val Venis offers an easy draw for fans nostalgic for that period of WWE programming, while also giving smaller shows a shot at exactly this kind of social media spillover. Whether Morley continues to pick up bookings on a regular basis remains to be seen, but if his first few appearances back are any indication, the character still has plenty of life left in it — and clearly still knows how to get a reaction, intentional or otherwise.

As for what comes next, it’s worth watching whether more independent promotions look to book Venis for similar legends-style appearances, and whether moments like the one in New Jersey continue to find their way into the wrestling conversation online.
