Gunther vs. Nick Aldis Is Official For SummerSlam

SummerSlam just got personal. Gunther will face Nick Aldis one-on-one at WWE’s biggest show of the summer — and it took a stage invasion, a boot to the gut and an on-the-spot ruling from Triple H to make it happen.

The announcement came at WWE’s SummerSlam kickoff event at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Saturday. As Paul “Triple H” Levesque spoke with Michael Cole, Gunther stormed the stage with a grievance: in his eyes, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis cost him and Sami Zayn their tag team match at Saturday Night’s Main Event — a match that, had they won, would have added both men to the Undisputed WWE Championship match at SummerSlam.

The Ring General demanded to know what Levesque planned to do about it. He got his answer when Aldis walked out instead. Gunther put a boot into the GM’s midsection, Aldis answered back, and security had to pull the two apart before Levesque delivered the verdict that brought the house down: at SummerSlam, it’s Gunther vs. Nick Aldis, one-on-one.

WWE wasted no time leaning into the moment, declaring on social media: “You wanna fight?! You got a fight!!”

The stakes for Aldis go well beyond settling a score. SummerSlam will mark his first match of any kind since 2023 — and, remarkably, his WWE in-ring debut. The former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion has spent his WWE run entirely in the suit, running SmackDown from behind the GM’s desk. Now he steps between the ropes against one of the most decorated and dangerous champions of the modern era.

For Gunther, the message is simpler: if the door to the Undisputed WWE Championship match is closed, he’ll take his frustration out on the man who closed it.

Gunther vs. Nick Aldis joins a stacked SummerSlam card when the two-night event kicks off on August 1.
