CM Punk Details 2012 Brazil Incident: Gun Drawn After Chris Jericho’s Brazilian Flag Stunt

CM Punk has opened up about one of the more harrowing moments of his WWE tenure — a 2012 live event in São Paulo, Brazil that escalated well beyond the squared circle.

The incident took place at an untelevised WWE show headlined by a WWE Championship match between Punk and Chris Jericho. The match ended in chaos after Jericho disrespected the Brazilian flag, a move that enraged the crowd. According to Punk’s own account, the situation turned genuinely threatening when a gun was pointed directly at him in the aftermath.

The Brazilian flag carries enormous cultural and national pride for Brazilians, and any perceived disrespect toward it tends to provoke an intense reaction. What unfolded that night in São Paulo apparently crossed the line from heated fan anger into something far more serious, with Punk recalling that the danger was very real and very immediate.

The 2012 period was one of the most prominent of Punk’s career — he was deep into a lengthy WWE Championship reign that would ultimately stretch to over 400 days — so the Brazil incident represents a stark reminder that the life of a touring professional wrestler can come with genuine risks far removed from the controlled environment of a televised broadcast.

Punk’s willingness to revisit the story now offers a rare first-hand window into just how volatile that night in São Paulo became, and how quickly a worked finish can spiral into an unscripted crisis with real-world consequences.
