Paul Heyman Says He Nearly Got Fired Over The Sandman’s ECW One Night Stand Entrance, With Vince McMahon Refusing To Pay For Metallica

Paul Heyman is revisiting one of ECW’s most celebrated moments — and revealing just how close it came to never happening. During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Heyman opened up about the 2005 WWE-produced ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view, disclosing that he nearly lost his job fighting to get The Sandman the entrance he deserved.

At the heart of the dispute was money. Vince McMahon didn’t want to foot the bill for the Metallica track — “Enter Sandman” — that had become synonymous with The Sandman’s identity throughout his ECW run. The song was the whole point: that iconic, slow walk through the crowd with a Singapore cane while thousands of ECW faithful sang along was one of the defining images of the original promotion, and Heyman clearly felt staging the moment without it would have been a hollow tribute.

Heyman pushed hard enough that it put his WWE position at risk. What ultimately ended up on the show, of course, has gone down as one of the most emotionally charged entrances in modern wrestling history. The full Madison Square Garden crowd embracing that moment gave the entire One Night Stand event much of its energy and authenticity.

The anecdote is a reminder of how much behind-the-scenes wrestling can feel like a negotiation between creative passion and corporate caution. That Heyman was willing to stake his job on a single entrance speaks to how deeply he understood what ECW meant to its audience — and why getting that specific detail right wasn’t optional to him.
