Batista Explains Why He Left WWE And Won’t Go Back

Dave Batista is once again shutting down any hope of a return to the ring, explaining in blunt terms why he walked away from WWE and why nothing could bring him back.

Speaking with Cale Owen, the former World Heavyweight Champion revisited his decision to step away from wrestling while he was still one of the company’s top stars. Batista said the move cost him financially and admitted it was one of the hardest choices he’s made, but he felt WWE was heading in a direction that no longer suited him.

“I left the company, and I left on good terms. I left at the height of my career, but it was for the right reasons,” Batista said. “It was hard as f*ck to walk away because I walked away and I went broke. It was nice having that check come in every week, man. It really was. But I walked away because the company was heading in a direction that just wasn’t right for me. So, you know, it worked out. I was lucky that it worked out.”

Since leaving the business, Batista has become one of Hollywood’s most bankable action stars, headlining major franchises and building a career far removed from the squared circle. Despite that success, speculation about a potential in-ring return has followed him for years — something he says he understands but has no interest in indulging.

“It’s hard to walk away. Most people don’t. That’s why it’s almost like a running joke when wrestlers retire, because they never retire. They retire like five times,” Batista said. “People always thought over the years that I would come back, that I’d come out of retirement. I told them over and over, ‘I won’t.’ I had a f*cking storybook ending, and I won’t sh*t on it. I’ll go do manual labor before I tarnish that. If I go broke again… I know what it’s like to be poor. I don’t like being poor. But I know what it’s like, and I will go f*cking broke and be poor before I ever go back to wrestling. I will never wrestle again.”

Batista’s comments echo what he’s said publicly for years, but the way he frames it this time — willing to accept financial hardship rather than compromise his exit — underscores just how firmly he views his wrestling story as finished. His WWE farewell, capped by a memorable run as world champion and a send-off widely regarded as one of the better retirement angles in company history, clearly still means something to him.

It’s a notable contrast to the era of wrestling nostalgia WWE has leaned into in recent years, with legends returning for one-off matches or full-time runs well past their prime. Batista, by his own account, wants no part of that cycle. For a business built on “never say never,” his latest remarks make clear there’s at least one door he considers permanently closed.
