WWE Money in the Bank: Zayn Title Triple Threat, Rhodes-Orton Rumored

WWE’s Money in the Bank card is filling out ahead of the October 10 premium live event in New Orleans, and two more matches appear to be taking shape beyond the confirmed men’s and women’s ladder matches and Roman Reigns’ World Heavyweight Championship defense against LA Knight.

The first involves the Undisputed WWE Championship. Sami Zayn won the title from CM Punk on the September 11 episode of SmackDown, capturing his second reign with the belt. There was no time to celebrate, though — Zayn’s first show as champion, from Corpus Christi, saw him thrown into an impromptu main-event defense against former best friend Kevin Owens. Zayn survived, extending his reign past the nine days his first run lasted, but the finish was clouded by outside interference from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Punk himself.

With Punk and Owens now tangled up in each other’s business and both factoring into Zayn’s title matches over the past two weeks, all signs point toward Nick Aldis booking a three-way for Money in the Bank pitting Zayn against both Punk and Owens. It’s not the kind of title defense Zayn would ask for, but a win in that spot could let him put both rivalries behind him — at least for now. Johnny Gargano, who has been promised a future title opportunity by Zayn, looms as a wildcard, though it seems more likely WWE keeps stringing that shot along rather than adding him to the mix in New Orleans.

The second potential addition is a third meeting between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton. Rhodes returned to SmackDown on September 18 for his first appearance since losing to Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event, and the interview he gave to Michael Cole hinted at a noticeably darker edge — Rhodes told Cole he wouldn’t hesitate the next time he had a chance to finish Orton off. A social media clip posted by Triple H shortly after only reinforced the idea that ‘The American Nightmare’ may be shifting toward a heel turn. With Orton also losing his Money in the Bank qualifying match that same night, both men are currently without a spot on the October 10 card, setting up an obvious opportunity for WWE to close out their trilogy in New Orleans.

Neither match has been officially announced, but both fit squarely into stories WWE has been actively building. The Zayn-Punk-Owens dynamic has been simmering for weeks, with interference and shifting allegiances practically demanding a blow-off, and a triple threat would let WWE settle it without forcing a decisive winner between Punk and Owens individually. Meanwhile, the Rhodes-Orton feud has taken on a different tone entirely — less about a straightforward rivalry and more about what kind of person Cody Rhodes becomes if pushed far enough. A trilogy match, especially framed around a potential heel turn, would be a fitting way to punctuate that story on a stage as big as Money in the Bank.

WWE has yet to confirm either matchup, but with the card taking shape quickly, official word could come as soon as the next episodes of Raw and SmackDown.
