WWE’s first major event in the United Kingdom since 1992 was a huge success for not only the company, but the Welsh economy also, the BBC is reporting.
The September 2022 event was held at the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff. Over 60,000 fans from across the world with three quarters of that total travelling from outside of Wales to attend the event, which was headlined by Roman Reigns defending his WWE Undisputed Universal Championship against Drew McIntyre.
In a statement, the Welsh government said that the show generated £21.8 million (equivalent to $27.1 million) in local revenue. In a survey of over 3,000 respondents, over half of non-locals asked said that the show made them want to explore other parts of Wales.
Clash at the Castle proved to be a success for WWE also, including being the largest European gate in wrestling history. The show was also the most internationally viewed PLE in WWE history and the best merchandise-selling event not to be a WrestleMania.
WWE will return to the United Kingdom this July for their upcoming WWE Money in the Bank event in London, England. It will be the first time the show has taken place in the UK.
UK broadcaster BT Sport have already announced plans to air not only the Money In The Bank event, but also the previous night’s edition of SmackDown live at UK time, making it the first time ever a live WWE broadcast has aired at UK time.
