The fan backlash at Vince McMahon’s apparent return to WWE creative has gained pace since Monday’s Raw, with thousands of messages across social media expressing fan discontent at the move.
The hashtag #FireVince had been trending on Twitter since early Tuesday and fans continue to do whatever they can to get the 77-year-old fired from the company.
On Wednesday morning, infuriated fans took it to WWE’s The Bump’s live chat section in order to really let their voices be heard. The Bump is the home of exclusive WWE Superstar interviews, and other live segments. They also have a live chat, and today, fans decided to give them something that they really can’t talk about on the show. Hundreds of fans started spamming the chat with “fire vince,” which is also becoming a popular chant at events.
Fan backlash has only intensified since the tumultuous return of McMahon. A “fire vince” chant reportedly broke out Tuesday night during a taping of WWE NXT. McMahon was installed as Executive Chairman during WWE’s blockbuster sale to Endeavor. Reports of McMahon’s comeback painted a scene of locker room disarray amid last-minute rewrites and changing plans on the fly.
In the midst of backlash against the WWE Chairman, some of the top trends from seething fans included:
- #WorstRaw
- #WWEWomenDeserveBetter
- #FireVinceMcMahon
- #FireVince
Monday’s broadcast of Raw was universally panned with minimal wrestling and maximum chaos. The booking of also women came under heavy scrutiny with just one women’s match. This gave way to #WWEWomenDeserveBetter trending.
Fan attention now appears to be switching to Friday’s broadcast of SmackDown from Portland, OR with a movement on social media asking fans who are in attendance at the Moda Center to ‘Hijack SmackDown’ and chant “fire vince” throughout the live broadcast.
At the time of writing, the hashtags #FireVinceMcMahon continues to be a top trend in the United States.
